In plain words, Lateral Cephalometry is an X-Ray taken perpendicular to the patient’s sagittal plane. The use of it came in 1958, and M. R Kean introduced it to the medical world. Since 1958, this method is in use due to its advantages. Orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning are the top applications of this medical imaging method. Also, the doctor can analyze the progress of treatments with this test. Still, since Lateral Cephalometry is an X-Ray procedure, the number of times that a patient undergoes it is a factor to consider for safety. As you know, exposure to radiation comes with a few health risks, and cancer is the most dangerous side effect of it.
When a patient has to undergo orthognathic surgery, the doctor will recommend this imaging to get a better understanding of the patient’s condition. And, even dentists recommend Lateral Cephalometry for their patients now. Sometimes, LCR is the short term of it. A dentist would recommend this for patients to analyze the relation of the jaw and teeth. The general view sometimes doesn’t reveal the facts; hence the lateral view is used here.

For example, it reveals more about the skeleton; hence tumours and other issues with soft tissue such as in the brain will not get detected here. A detailed view of the skull is the top advantage of the LCR. Teeth formation related to the jaw is a factor that is vital to analyze when it comes to teeth issues. For example, the teeth of some patients move forward, and the Lateral Cephalometry shows the extension of it in detail.
A doctor can get a rough idea of the sinuses as well through this imaging method. As mentioned, soft tissue stays dark on the final x-ray; hence if the sinuses contain a foreign object; the doctor can see it through the x-ray. Kids tend to put things into their noses, and those foreign objects can end in the sinuses. What is the risk of it? Well, modern x-ray machines use radiation in low amounts. But, it is a known fact that radiation exposure may lead to cancer formation later. So, it is your doctor’s responsibility to keep the number of Lateral Cephalometry to a minimum from the diagnosing point to the cure. Don’t worry though.
